President-elect Rodrigo Duterte doesn’t like the idea of “overstaying” public officials. For this reason, Duterte rejected the proposed deferment of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled this October.
A postponement of the polls would only mean that the sitting officials would remain in their posts beyond their terms in office.
“I’m not in favor. The law says that when you end there, you end there,” Duterte said during a press conference in Davao City last Saturday (May 28).
Duterte, a lawyer, noted that postponing the Barangay and SK polls would also need action from a Congress, since a new law would have to be passed for it to happen.
Poll officials had just finished conducting the 2016 national elections wherein Duterte won the presidency in convincing fashion.
