Hontiveros to Duterte: Your words urging to kill criminals have weight of policy

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday is not backing down from the insults hurled against her by President Rodrigo Duterte who called her stupid for claiming that police killings of two teenagers were tantamount a government policy on extrajudicial killings.

“President Duterte may insult me but he cannot deny the fact that the words coming from his lips or those of any head of State, have the effect of policy,” Hontiveros said.

“The President cannot wash his hands of these killings. Through his words and endless provocation, President Duterte set into motion the killing of thousands. He has smeared the image of the police force. He inspired this culture of killing and impunity,” Hontiveros said.

Duterte lashed out at Hontiveros for reiterating during Tuesday’s hearing that the killings of 17-year old Kian Lloyd delos Santos 19-year old Carl Angelo Arnaiz were emblematic of the government’s policy on extrajudicial killings.

“Do you think two killings, even if it’s illegal would make a policy. Paka bobo naman niya,” said Duterte last Tuesday.

But Hontiveros, who claimed it was Public Attorney Percida Acosta who made the policy claim, hit back at the President whom he said has a well-documented record of encouraging violence against drug dependents and suspected drug suspects.
